Deacon Cathy Milliken was installed as
St. Christopher’s new parish deacon in March 2024. Beyond serving at the altar,
she hopes to support parishioners in their own ministries as we seek to fulfill
our collective baptismal covenant. We will, with God’s help. Cathy
is a native of Washington State and a cradle Episcopalian. She graduated from
Duke University in 1985 with a bachelor’s degree in public policy, and in 1989
with a master’s degree in policy sciences and public affairs. Her professional
area of focus was environmental policy with experience in environmental
management consulting; solid and hazardous waste management; and environmental
remediation.
Eventually,
Cathy perceived a call to ordained ministry. She completed a three-year course
of academic study and pastoral training in the Diocese of Milwaukee’s Deacon Formation
Program and was ordained as a Vocational Deacon in 2007. Her previous
ministries include: Chaplaincy and Bible Study at the Ozaukee County Jail
(2005-2011); Parish Deacon at St. James, West Bend, and Pastoral Care Clergy Associate
while the church was without a priest (2009-2016); Youth Christian Formation;
establishing a Community of Hope center for the training of lay pastoral
caregivers; training lay eucharistic visitors; and, with the bishop’s
permission, conducting services of Holy Communion from the Reserved Sacrament
for homebound parishioners.
Cathy
met her husband, Chuck, at Duke and they have been married for nearly 38 years.
They moved throughout the Midwest as career opportunities arose. In 1999,
Milwaukee beckoned and Chuck accepted a position with Wisconsin Gas (now part
of WEC Energy Group) to manage mergers and acquisitions. They have lived in
Ozaukee County for 25+ years and are the parents of two adult daughters. Cathy’s
outside interests include adopting rescue dogs and cats, equestrian sports
(hunter/ jumper) with daughter Becky being a competitive rider, gardening, and
cheering for the Packers.
